GENERAL INFORMATION

Türkiye, as the 17th largest economy in the world and a candidate country in the EU integration process, has a continuous demand for professionals in translation and interpreting. Translation activities are essential across many areas—from diplomats and businesspeople to athletes and cultural representatives. As a profession that enables written and oral communication between different languages and cultures, translation requires specialization and professional expertise.

Our graduates, trained under the guidance of an experienced academic staff, have a wide range of employment opportunities thanks to the skills they acquire. They may work as freelance or in-house translators, international relations officers, patent and brand translators, administrative assistants, consular staff, or in various other positions. The program's strong cultural and academic foundation also helps graduates become project managers, editors, translation department coordinators and translation agency operators.

The employment opportunities available to our graduates are broad and diverse, in line with the learning outcomes of the education they receive under the guidance of our strong academic staff. Upon graduation, students may pursue careers in positions such as freelance or in-house translator, international relations officer, patent and trademark translator, administrative assistant, or consular staff member. In addition, the comprehensive cultural and academic background provided by the program enables graduates to advance rapidly in their careers and to assume roles such as editor, project manager, translation agency owner, or head of a translation department. Furthermore, it is expected that some of our graduates will successfully continue their education at the graduate level in disciplines such as economics, business administration, communication studies, international relations, sociology, literature, and translation studies, both in Türkiye and abroad. The main employment areas of our graduates include oral and written translation offices, local, national, and international print, visual, and audio media organizations, government ministries—particularly the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Undersecretariat of Foreign Trade—, as well as public institutions and organizations such as the State Planning Organization (DPT), National Intelligence Organization (MIT), Scientific and Technological Research Council of Türkiye (TÜBİTAK), and the Turkish Standards Institution (TSE). Additional employment opportunities are available in the foreign exchange departments of banks, publishing houses, editorial offices, universities and high-tech research institutes, international organizations, international non-governmental organizations, book translation, foreign missions, and customs clearance, import, and export companies.

Additionally, our graduates can work as research assistants in the relevant departments of universities, as well as academic careers in the departments of Translation Studies, Language and Literature, as well as foreign language teaching staff. Graduates may also pursue academic careers or work as research assistants in relevant departments of universities, and may serve as foreign language instructors in various institutions.

PROGRAM STRUCTURE

The language of instruction in the program is 30% English. All courses are offered on a semester basis. Students choose German or French as a second foreign language beginning in the first semester and continue with this language throughout their studies. During the first two years, courses primarily focus on developing students’ linguistic competence and preparing them for translation. In the third and fourth years, students take courses in specialized areas of translation and interpreting.Students who complete their third year are required to complete a summer internship worth 5 ECTS. The internship is conducted after the sixth semester and the report is submitted at the beginning of the seventh semester. To graduate, students must complete all course requirements (240 ECTS) and have a minimum GPA of 2.00 out of 4.00.

This department has been granted free access to the Phrase Academic Edition, an academic program ​designed for universities with translation courses.
